Mr. Athula

I started my career in the film industry in 1984, and over the years, I have worked in many different roles that helped me gain valuable experience. I began as an Art Director, where I was responsible for the visual design of film sets and creating the right look and feel for scenes. Later, as a Production Designer, I shaped the overall artistic vision of films, making sure everything looked consistent and beautiful.

One of my important roles was Prop Master, where I carefully selected and managed the items used in films to support the story and characters. I also worked as a Line Producer, managing budgets and the daily operations during filming to keep everything running smoothly.

I have worked in many film industries, including Hollywood, foreign films, and many Sri Lankan productions. Some notable films I contributed to include Beyond Rangoon, Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy, The Iron Triangle, Jungle Book II, Mother Teresa, Midnight’s Children, Bombay Velvet, The Gandhi Murder, and House of My Fathers.

One highlight of my career was working with “Film Locations Services,” owned by Mr. Chandran Rutnam. This company helped famous Hollywood directors like Steven Spielberg during their shoots in Sri Lanka. This experience allowed me to learn from top professionals and gain insight into international filmmaking.

I am proud to have contributed to Sri Lankan cinema, especially as an Art Director and Costume Designer on Sinhala classics such as Yugaanthaya, Kaliyugaya, Awaragira, Anantha Raaththriya and Aksharaya. These films helped showcase Sri Lanka’s rich culture through cinema.

With almost 40 years of experience, I started my own company, “Prime Asia Productions.” My goal is to help foreign filmmakers explore the beautiful landscapes of Sri Lanka and Asia and support them throughout their film projects. I want to promote local talent and resources while making international production easier.

I feel very lucky to have had this diverse and rewarding career. Moving forward, I will continue working to grow and promote Sri Lankan and Asian cinema worldwide.
